Bob's Story
Robert (Bob) Haag
President/CEO and Co-Founder, Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools
Superintendent and Co-Founder of the Charter Schools of Excellence™
Robert (Bob) Haag has been a leader and active participant in the Florida charter school movement since 1997. He is a co-founder and Superintendent of the K-5 Charter Schools of Excellence. The Charter Schools of Excellence Fort Lauderdale Campus is one of the first urban charter schools established in Broward County and one of the first Florida charter schools to receive accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The Fort Lauderdale Campus was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2008 and the Davie Campus in 2021. Since 1997, the Charter Schools of Excellence has grown from one campus to two serving over 660 students in Broward County.
Working with other early charter school operators, Mr. Haag spearheaded the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools (FCPCS) in 1997. FCPCS began as a grassroots network of 5 charter school operators who provided technical assistance to the growing number of new charter schools.
Under Mr. Haag’s stewardship, FCPCS has grown to become the primary membership organization with more than 550 member schools and has become one of the country's most influential charter school associations. It provides training and professional development, advocacy, information, and other resources to charter schools throughout the state.
From 1999 to 2003, he led the Steering Committee of the Tri-County Charter School Partnership, a coalition of charter schools that received $575,000 in grants from the South Florida Annenberg Challenge to implement a...Expand for more
n accountability and charter school improvement project.
In recognition of the FCPCS’ achievements and Mr. Haag’s leadership, the Walton Family Foundation awarded the organization one of its first Charter School Strategic Planning Grants. It provided $1.2 million over a three-year period to support the Consortium’s development.
Mr. Haag is the first charter school member of the AdvancEd Florida Accreditation Council and serves as a member of the Florida TaxWatch Center for Educational Performance and Accountability (CEPA) and the Community Foundation of Broward’s Superintendent’s “Kitchen” Cabinet. He is the former Vice-Chair of Broward County School District’s Charter School Task Force. Recently Mr. Haag was appointed to Governor DeSantis' Education Transition Team.
In November 2016, at the Florida State Conference Charter School Champions Award Event, Mr. Haag was awarded the “Visionary” Award for his service and dedication to over 20 years serving the Florida Charter School Movement. With his vision and under his leadership, the Charter School movement has grown from 5 charter schools and less than a thousand students in 1997 to over 700 charter schools and over 330,000 charter school students in Florida today. A great legacy to leave.
On August 31, 2020, Mr. Haag retired as Superintendent of his schools after serving over 24 years with them and over 44 years in FRS (Florida Retirement System). Today, he continues to be the President and CEO of the Consortium, dedicating his life to serving others.
In addition to his experience in the charter school arena, Mr. Haag has more than 45 years of experience as an entrepreneur, businessman, and real estate investor.
